Duty free shopping in St John and St Thomas!

"When duty free shopping, and with so many bargains, how do you choose! First let's get some of the not so fun stuff right out of the way..."

Your duty free exemption or personal exemption is the total value of the goods that you are coming home with that you did not take with you.

Your exemption includes:

*$1600.00 USD worth of goods.

*Up to 5 liters if alcohol (one being produced on St John Island or the other US Virgin Islands.)

*1000 Cigarettes

If you go over this exemption you will pay a duty of 5%.

Always keep your receipts. Be aware that there have been "undercover" US Customs agents offering phony receipts if they're aware of an expensive purchase! Be smart and declare all your purchases.

Be advised that you should always check in advance for any changes that may have occurred to duty-free allowances. Check the following websites for your country and the latest information:

United States Customs (if you click on the link go to travel locatedat the top of the page and scroll down and you'll see an article titled "Know before you GO!) There's lots of great information on this site! Here's the basics of it for US travelers.

Australian Customs Service
Canada Customs and Revenue Agency
United Kingdom Customs and Excise
